In the UK, according to Statista, in 2021 there were over 1 million solar installations which continues to increase by 4000 installs a month. Many deployed solar PV systems would reach their end of life starting this year. Therefore, it is vital to have a solution for these panels which would transform from being a renewable source to a big waste problem. Currently, around 10% of global cell waste is recycled due to the lack of no known systems, process, recovery treatments and ignorance for a huge future impact of this waste.

At the moment, there are a few small companies in the UK providing disposal services of solar panels. SolRecycle provides a unique opportunity to innovate in the UK market to resolve one of the biggest future problems, create a zero waste culture by recovering as much materials as possible and giving solar panels a new life.

SolRecycle plans to develop a solar panels recycling plant which will help users, manufacturers, distributors and installers manage end-of-life solar panels, instead of ending up in a landfill. The plant will consist of an automated solar PV recycling line which would contain four main stages:

  • Aluminium frame removal
  • Glass removal
  • Solar cell crushing
  • Producing ready-to-use raw materials

At the end of the process several valuable materials such as aluminium frame, glass, metal, silicon powder and plastic which are ready to be re-used in manufacturing new solar panels or other products will be obtained. SolRecycle’s solar PV recycling plant will recover up to 95% of the materials. Recovered materials can be used as raw materials to manufacture new products. This will increase the supply chain security, decrease the extraction of natural resources, remove the negative impact for the environment and help installers, distributors and manufacturers give old or damaged panels a new life.
